Keeping Your Broadband Internet Connection Secure
Broadband Internet access is an "always on" connection to the Internet that allows a user high speed access. Simply put, broadband is a faster way for you to gain access to the Internet and the web sites or pages that you want to see. "Always on" connections offer greater speed and may enhance a user's online experience. But, they also pose increased risk to your computer. Because your computer is always connected to the Internet, it is possible (if not certain) that someone will try to access your computer without your knowledge or approval. This risk can be greatly reduced through proper security.

In June 2009, Governor Paterson issued Executive Order No. 22
, which established a Broadband Development and Deployment Council. CSCIC Director Pelgrin is designated as a member of the Council, and CSCIC is supporting the Governor's broadband initiative through the preparation of broadband maps using GIS. Governor Paterson has designated CSCIC as the lead agency for the Broadband Mapping program in New York State.
NEW! October 27, 2009: CSCIC was awarded approximately $2.5 million in federal stimulus
funding for broadband mapping and planning activities, which will enable the mapping of New York's un-served and underserved areas to facilitate deployment of high-speed Internet access across the State, increase digital literacy programs, and spur economic development. The funding is through the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).
