New York State Cyber Security Conference to feature heavyweights of the cyber security field
ALBANY, N.Y., May 19, 2008- The New York State Cyber Security conference returns to the Empire State Plaza in Albany, N.Y., on June 4 and 5 to provide educational sessions on how to address the computer security challenges facing the public and private sectors and highlight the latest developments and advancements in online security.
Nearly 50 seminars and practical demonstrations by leading experts in the cyber security field highlight the two-day conference whose theme is dedicated to promoting a culture of online security.
The conference, now in its 11th year, runs Wednesday, June 4 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday, June 5 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
This event is presented by the New York State Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination (CSCIC); the University at Albany, State University of New York; and the New York State Forum.
"The increasing volume and sophistication of cyber security threats–including targeting phishing scams, data theft, and other online vulnerabilities–demand that we remain vigilant about securing our systems and information," said William F. Pelgrin, CSCIC Director. "This event is the foremost New York State conference on cyber security and is an important component in our proactive approach to enhancing our State's cyber security posture. I'm pleased to be working with the University at Albany and the New York State Forum to make this event possible."
"It is essential that we as a State do everything that we can to protect and secure our critical information resources," said Peter Bloniarz, Founding Dean of the University at Albany's College of Computing and Information. "Partnering with CSCIC and the New York State Forum on a number of educational and research programs, including this conference, has helped us produce graduates who are keeping our country's information systems safe, stable, and secure."
"The New York State Forum is pleased to be co-hosting this eleventh New York State Cyber Security Conference," said Gregory M. Benson, NYS Forum Executive Director. "As an organization involved since the beginning of this annual conference series, we have a unique perspective on just how much has been accomplished by New York State in the last decade. We are sure that events such as this that highlight best practices and showcase new and emerging technologies contribute substantially to the overall state ability to meet the increasing complex cyber security challenges."
The conference features a live hacking demonstration led by Dr. Sanjay Goel of the University at Albany. The demonstration is designed to underscore the sophisticated methods currently employed by attackers to undermine online security.
The conference's keynote speaker, Patrick Gray, is a senior security strategist for Cisco Systems and a 20-year veteran of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Gray's background has equipped him with first-hand knowledge of the hacking community, its aims and methodologies as they target the public and private sectors.
The conference traditionally attracts a broad cross section of the government, business and academic communities, including information security officers, IT directors, web and application developers, network and system administrators, chief information officers, business and project managers, computer forensic specialists, attorneys, educators, auditors and law enforcement personnel.
More than 40 exhibitor booths and technology companies will offer presentations and demonstrations. Participants include Microsoft, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Cisco Systems, IBM, AT&T, Verizon Business, Nokia, Unisys, Symantec Corporation, McAfee, IP Logic and Checkpoint Software Technologies, among dozens of others.
